World Oceans Day 2023

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

World Oceans Day, celebrated annually on June 8th, is a global initiative that reminds us of the critical role oceans play in our everyday lives. This year’s theme is Planet Ocean: Tides Are Changing. The ocean covers over 70% of our planet and produces at least 50% of our oxygen. It serves as a habitat for the majority of Earth’s biodiversity and acts as the primary source of protein for over a billion people worldwide. Additionally, the ocean plays a vital role in our economy, employing an estimated 40 million people in ocean-based industries by 2030. Alarming statistics reveal that 90% of big fish populations have been depleted, and 50% of coral reefs have been destroyed. It’s crucial, now more than ever, for us to create a new balance, one that restores the ocean’s vibrancy and brings it new life. The good news is that there are so many incredible organizations, projects, and individuals working to better our oceans! Below we have highlighted a couple of our sponsored projects who are focused on ocean conservation and education.

The Ocean Defenders

The Ocean Defenders is a nonprofit art, education and ocean literacy organization based in the Philippines.

Their primary goal is to educate and promote ocean literacy through an engaging platform. They offer a fun and informative comic art series tailored for kids aged 8 and up. Within these pages, readers will find a wealth of environmental facts, presented in an easily digestible format. They envision a world where every individual becomes an ocean action hero in their own unique way. Our interconnectedness with a thriving and healthy ocean ecosystem lies at the core of this vision. Watershed Action Lab

Watershed Action Lab aims to improve the health of the watersheds we live in through citizen science and community action.

They are currently working on an oyster restoration project in Biscayne Bay through the building of vertical oyster gardens which improve water quality. They recently received a grant from McKinsey & Company for their incredible work in using nature based solutions to regenerate our waterways. If you care about improving water quality, they are always looking for volunteers who can help with this project. To learn more, visit their website
